This year marks the 20th anniversary of SEGA’s mascot Sonic the Hedgehog. Yes it really was 20 years ago that the blue blur burst onto our screens and put the Megadrive firmly on the map. The fanbase that has grown up with Sonic are a creative bunch and turn their hand to all sorts of fan based homage from artwork and fanfiction right up to home brewed videogames. Still the ultimate tribute has to be the now annual Summer of Sonic convention, created by a small set of dedicated fans, for a huge set of devoted ones, and every year it gets bigger and better.
Last year saw Crush 40 on the guest list, treating the crowds to an intimate, and astonishingly epic concert of Sonic music, there were chances to play the, then unreleased, Sonic Colours and Sonic 4 ep 1. Nintendo TV were in attendance and a whole host of events were played out throughout the day, a free goody bag for everyone that had comics, figures and a host of SEGA items given to everyone that attended, and the best part? All of this was done for free, and you don’t have to be a huge Sonic fan to have a really great time.
As you can imagine, we are very excited to see whats in store for Summer of Sonic 11, which will be at a yet undisclosed location in London on Saturday 25th June. How can the organisers top last year? Well SEGA Europe are partnering up with the team, and that could mean some unexpected and exciting surprises for attendees.
We Are Arcade will be there, and if you cant attend, keep an eye on the site for pictures, videos and interviews, but best of all come along and see for yourself, you wont be disappointed.
So, are you coming? Have you been to any of the other shows? Share your stories with us in a comment below!
